Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique, Waverley Overture & Les Nuits d'ete

The London Symphony Orchestra present Berlioz's Waverley overture, Les nuits d'été and Symphonie fantastique, featuring the acclaimed mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill. Valery Gergiev showcases his opulent interpretation of Berlioz's landmark piece Symphonie fantastique, the story of an artist’s ‘hopeless love’, complete with waltzes, witches and a hallucinogenic nightmare.

A setting of poems by Berlioz’s friend and neighbour Théophile Gautier, Les nuits d’été (Summer Nights) again explores Berlioz’s favoured theme of love; the new love of spring, bereavement, absence, and the dream of a place where love can be eternal. It is bound by this theme rather than a narrative arc – a distinguishing feature amongst contemporaneous song cycles – and pioneered the use of a colourful orchestral accompaniment in place of the genre’s then-conventional piano.
